The Little Voice And The Path To Good Health


Eating right and exercising lays the foundation towards great physical health. But, when our minds and hearts are in chaos, we eventually hit a ceiling, no matter how good we eat nor how much we workout. Our issues and inner struggles play a major role--if not dictate fully--why we do or don't eat right or do or don't workout. Our path towards "true wellness" clogged with underlying complications we mask or ignore.
Many--if not most of us--possibly all of us--cater to an inner voice that shifts and shapes our actions. This voice, trained by our past experiences, is the voice that wants to protect us and direct us towards what we are familiar with, thus what we survived. (This voice is called many things in society, but we will stick with, "voice".) This voice keeps us in an unhealthy relationship because it has watched us manage it from childhood to now. This voice whispers when we are too lazy to workout or need a drink to drown out a rough day at work, because it wants us to be comfortable. This voice will make us run miles and miles to compensate for last night, when it didn't shout for us to stop eating so much crap. This voice will often be a ventriloquist and we can hear its screeching judgement coming from another person's glance or bouncing off a reflection as we pass a shop window.
This voice is the buffer--the enabler--the drug dealer--the bartender--the salesman who seizes on our real ambition: peace. This voice is the same voice that pits man against man, woman against woman, nation against nation, religion against religion. This voice is not the voice of reason, but the voice of self-defense. This voice of self-defense wants to protect what we understand and are familiar with. This voice challenges anything that compromises its barriers to the place in us where peace matters most: our heart.
This voice, when we stop and listen to it--the timbre, pitch, bass and volume, is not our voice. If we pause before we act, and listen to this voice, we can hear it more clearly. It sounds like a stranger giving us orders. It's the club doorman who holds us back as he lets the glamorous in. It's the sound we hear when a comedian tells a tasteless joke. It's the dark vibration surrounding us when are rejected at an audition or job interview. This is what we truly hear if we stop and listen to this voice.
But, if we try to hear beyond this scratchy, hopeless cry, we'll notice the cracked whisper of our true selves. It is our voice, speaking from our real souls, fighting to be heard with the foot of doubt pressed upon its neck. Listen beyond that initial voice--the one that makes you despise your actions, and focus on the real voice, coming from the depths of your soul. This is what guides us. This, is our force. (In religious and spiritual doctrine, this is called many different things throughout the Universe, but for this, we will call it, "voice.)
To hone in on our true voice takes constant diligence and vigilance. In time, the channels open wider and wider, its neck grows stronger and stronger, and the vocals chords soon are too strong for any foot to deny. You will become a duet, and eventually, you will become whole. Practice, everyday. Every moment of despair. Every left turn when you feel you should go right. Every moment before turning into a drive-through window. Each time you are rejected. Offered a line to get high. Told you are of no worth. In despair. Frustrated. Angry. Hurt. Jealous. Gluttonous. Obnoxious. Overbearing. Ruthless. Hateful. Disrespectful. Unmotivated. Vilified. Find the voice that is the real you and its sound is relaxed, harmonious, clear and vibrant. You will champion amazing feats, and uplift the world around you.
Listen, to your voice and the world will listen to you.
